Versatility of Hydroponic Drip Irrigation System

Fundamentals of Modern Hydroponic Farming

Hydroponic – a soilless cultivation technique is the basis of all hydroponic farming systems wherein plants are grown in water fortified with plant nutrients. There are different types of hydroponic farming i.e. Deep-Water Culture (DWC), Nutrient Film Technique (NFT), Ebb and Flow. Aeroponics is also a type of hydroponic where the nutrient solution is made available to plant roots in the form of fine mist instead of water. The hydroponic farming systems may be “run to waste” where nutrient solution is allowed to run off and is not recirculated in the system as is mostly the case when the plants are raised on inert substrates of various types. The modern hydroponic farming systems are generally “close loop type” based on Nutrient Film Technique wherein the nutrient solution is replenished and recirculated. The most commercial or industrial hydroponic farming systems are vertical hydroponic systems carried out by stacking the gullies of nutrient solution one over the other in a vertical manner.
