Hydroponics Produce and Food Safety

The most hydroponic plant factories operate under controlled environment, thus allowing for a strict food safety quality control in the production systems. Contamination of produce with pesticides or other harmful substances is therefore ruled out and a genuine pesticide free produce of vegetables and fruits is assured. However, hydroponic food production systems do require that the water used is also free of bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Salmonella. Hence, water testing in hydroponic food production system is equally essential for pathogens harmful to human health. In an end to end production system quality of water is also required to be monitored during post-harvest operations from the human health view point.
