Light Spectrum Manipulations for Enhancement of Nutritional Quality in Hydroponics

Advantages of hydroponics in obtaining high yields, good quality, continuous production, efficient resource utilization, overcoming impacts of environment changes and unstable vegetable supply as well as checking pollution of land resources have been fully realized. However, use of Light Emitting Diodes (LED) lights in the recent times in hydroponic production systems has opened up immense possibilities for significant improvements in quantity and nutritional quality of hydroponic produce. State-of-the-art LED lighting systems now make it possible to trigger different light spectrums at different life spans of plants that would incite photochromes towards production of higher antioxidants, phenolic and flavonoids compounds in the produce. Addition of purple light spectrum along with R+B in hydroponic lettuce production system been reported to reduce undesirable nitrate content in lettuce.
