Utilization of Vertical Space with Hydroponics

Non availability of large land areas in cities restricts crop raising and food production, thus fresh vegetables and fruits have to be fetched from long distance thus resulting in long food miles. Hydroponics technology has overcome land scarcity by opening opportunities for utilization of vertical space for crop raising in Urban and peri-urban areas. Stacks of crops one over the other can be grown vertically through technique generally referred to as vertical hydroponics. Another use of vertical hydroponics in cities and metropolis lies in vertical gardening wherein vertical walls and other landscape features are created to improve quality of life in the cities. Use of vertical hydroponics in interior designing with small growth chambers fitted in the drawing rooms is very common in Japan and western countries.
