Integration of Latest Hydroponic Technologies for Setting up Home Hydroponic System

Hydroponics is best defined as a technique of growing plants in water fortified with nutrients instead of raising plants in soil as in conventional farming. Hydroponic farming offers best solutions for food production issues arising out of changing climate, urbanization and ever-increasing populations besides food safety. In the urban and peri-urban areas where meagre space is available for growing vegetables and herbs for daily use for self-consumption, the best way is to go for a semi-automatic home hydroponic set up. Home hydroponic system also refered to as indoor farming is designed to grows leafy vegetables on a small scale at home, instead of installing a greenhouse. Besides leafy vegetables, herbs and micro-greens, home hydroponic systems can also be utilized to grow other vegetables such as hydroponic tomato and cucumbers with suitable modifications in the growing techniques and nutrient recipe.
School of Hydroponics of the Institute of Horticulture Technology has been able to customize the latest technological advances in the hydroponic sector to the home hydroponic systems for the benefit of urban and peri-urban dwellers. Introduction of low cost Indoor Vertical Hydroponic System (IVHS) is one such innovation that has been developed by School of Hydroponics. Depending upon the cost, one wants to incur on the home hydroponic set up, a small greenhouse can also be established on the roof top or terrace to create Hydroponic Farming Terrace, however, the space dedicated for Hydroponic Farming Terrace must have 8-12 hours light and adequate natural ventilation. Electrical Conductivity and pH as well as irrigation system in this system can be automated with the use of appropriate sensors identified by School of Hydroponics.
